Tips To Keep Track Of Budget

When it comes to your finances, it is important to work on your budget’s effectiveness. After all, your spending plan is only as good as…your plan. With some good planning, you can improve your budget so that it does what it should in terms of keeping your cash moving smoothly through your personal economy. Here are 3 things you can do to improve the way your budget works:
1. Make Sure You Leave Plenty of Time to Pay Bills
Late charges can be a real budget buster. If you don’t pay your bills on time, you can waste a great deal of money out of your budget. Make sure you leave plenty of time for your bills to make it on time, especially if you mail a check. You want to send in a check at least 7 to 10 days before it’s due. While it isn’t always necessary, I like to schedule my electronic payments for a day or two before they are due. That way, if there is some sort of problem, you can address it.
2. Look for Money Leaks — And Plug Them
Have a look through your spending. Track your spending for two or three months. Figure out your biggest money leaks. Some experts think that 10% to 15% of the average household’s income is wasted. Look through your own spending and pinpoint where your biggest wastes are. Then, create a plan to plug the leaks. Once you identify your money leaks, it’s easier to reduce your spending and save more. It will tighten your budget, and save you money.
3. Keep Track of Your Cash
On top of looking through the spending in your bank account, and what you keep track of in your personal finance software, you also need to watch your cash spending. Sometimes, cash can slip away without you noticing as much. It can also be hard to keep track of what you’re spending in different budget categories if you don’t have a bank statement to remind you of where you are spending. This makes it hard to track down your financial leaks and plug them. Multiple trips to the ATM, withdrawing cash, and then spending it, can really break the budget.

Depending on your personal spending style, and your financial goals, it might be worth it to tighten your budget a little bit more. If you find that you are having trouble meeting your goals, consider tweaking your budget, and looking for problems.

Time is the greatest resource, and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed. Before I created my budget, I monitored my expenses over a few months to figure out what I spend. I reviewed my budget regularly for effectiveness and modify as needed.
