For the past two years, I’ve been side hustling with the best of them. Side hustling, in case you are unfamiliar with the term, is work that you do outside of your 9-5. You can side hustle to make extra money, learn a new skill, pay off debt, or just have some fun.
Of course, there are several characteristics that you should try to have in order to be a highly successful side hustler. Here they are below:
1. Treat Your Side Gig Like Your 9-5
It’s really important to treat every side gig as if it is a 9-5. Having a professional attitude really shows when working with clients, and they will appreciate the level of respect that you have for their business needs. I’ve noticed that many people treat side hustles like a hobby and don’t devote the necessary level of professionalism that growing a strong side business requires. In order to be one of the best, treat it like your day job, and you’ll notice a huge difference in the amount of income you are able to acquire.
2. Have An Incredible Work Ethic
Side hustling is not for the faint of heart. You have to have the discipline to wake up earlier than your friends and stay up later. That’s because side hustles often have to be completed outside of regular business hours and take a lot of motivation. You might have to turn down dinner invitations from friends or skip a fun party to get your work done, but the payoff can be immense. It’s not easy, but the satisfaction of paying off debt using money you made on the side is really satisfying.
3. Be Receptive to Critiques
If you think of a side hustle like your own small business, you should be open to critiques of your work. After all, sometimes those more experienced than you can offer helpful words of advice. The more receptive you are to taking good advice, the better you can make your side hustle. No one has all the answers, so definitely seek out a mentor and ask their advice on how you’re doing.
4. Be Gracious to Others
One of the best things you can do as the owner of a successful side business is help others who want to do the same. Answering questions about how others can start side hustles is a great way to give back and help others make extra money.
Ultimately, I think that side hustles are a great way to get more exposure to your talents and pay off debts. I’ve been able to pay off thousands of dollars in credit card and student loan debt simply by working hard outside of normal work hours. Plus, if you choose a side hustle that you love and enjoy, it doesn’t feel like work. Also, you never know. Your side hustle could grow into a legitimate full time job eventually!
