Differentiating between Need vs. Wants

Published on Jul 21 2010 // Written By // Personal Finance

Through time immemorial we have been trying to differentiate between needs and wants. This is definitely no rocket science, yet it is the most difficult thing to do. The issue is greatly subjective with something been analyzed as a want for one, which may be a need to the other, depending upon his or her socio economic background. It wouldn’t also be harmful to say that sometimes needs and wants are analyzed on the basis of conspicuous consumption.

The most important issue in this mix up of needs and wants is the great potential to build up on your savings. Unless you are a millionaire, adding more to your millions by the day, you generally live out of your balance in the bank. It wouldn’t do more harm to add on a more mullah to the fast receding balance in your bank. The name of the game is to be able to decide and choose between your needs and your wants.
It is very important to understand and realize that needs and wants are not the same thing and cannot be measured in the same strata. You may want a designer bag, but that cannot be a need. More often than not, we confuse our needs by wants, which in reality are simply cravings of the mind. An easy example would be the need of a car. Does one need to replace a used car with a much sought after luxury brand just for its appeal. This is where we confuse our needs with our wants. It has become so very imperative to take stock of our needs and wants.

If one is a blogger like me and needs to be online for most part of my wide eyed conscious moments, a good computer or a laptop becomes a necessity. I would definitely not construe the need for an upgraded laptop a need just to satisfy my key clicking skills at playing a computer game.

All you need to do is to sit back and study your desires in isolation, and to look at your lifestyle and understand that you could still have had a comfortable and a fulfilling life by forgoing that something, which you could have done without. In simple terms ‘that something’ could be termed as want and needs to be analyzed before it starts posing as a need.
