Summertime is here, and now is a great time to take your family on a much needed summer vacation. However, not everyone has a large vacation fund that they can dip into every time they want to go somewhere new, but fear not, we’ve got some great tips to share!
1. Have a Huge Garage Sale
Garage sale season is one of the greatest things about summer. Spend a week or two going through your old items, and decide what you don’t want anymore. Then, carefully label all of them, and go ahead and sell, sell, sell. If you have enough inventory, you can make a few hundred dollars in one day! That’s enough for two nights in a hotel to get your vacation started off right.
2. Start a Side Hustle
The truth about side hustling is that it’s hard work! However, it’s completely worth it. Whether you start a newspaper route, sell your crafts online, or become a freelance writer, a side hustle income is a great way to save up extra money to take your whole family on vacation. Some side hustles, like starting a blog, will take much more time and effort than landing a babysitting gig, so make sure you know how much time it will take to get your side hustle off the ground before counting on it for extra income.
3. Give Up Your Gym Membership
Gym memberships are often $60-$100 a month! If you go the next two months without one, you can afford a few dinners out for your vacation or one night in a hotel room. Remember, there are tons of free workout videos on YouTube, and you can rent workout DVDs for free from your local library. So, there’s no reason to spend a large amount of money on a gym membership when you could use it for a vacation instead!
4. Open a High Yield Savings Account
There are several banks that offer high yield savings accounts where you can get a return as high as 1%. Every time you get extra money, a rebate, or a check as a gift, you can deposit it in a high yield savings account and watch it grow.
5. Become a Coupon Champion
The one category that most of us overspend on is food. Whether overindulging at the grocery store or going out to eat too often, food is often our greatest downfall. So, when you have a goal in mind like going on a vacation, try to coupon as much as possible. Layer coupons and get a few items from the grocery store for free, and utilize half off coupons every time you go out to eat. Then, put what you would have spent in a savings account to be used for your vacation!
As evidenced, there are so many ways that you can save money so that you can afford to go on a summer vacation. Whether you cut back some of your current expenses or work hard to make more money, that vacation should be well within your reach in no time!
