How Flexible Holidays Help You Save Money on Traveling
Everyone wants to travel but with the high prices of gasoline and flight tickets, not everyone can afford to travel for the various holidays they celebrate throughout the year. There are many holidays that families celebrate each year with one part of the family or the other.
From Christmas to Kwanza to Hanukah to New Year’s to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, there are so many reasons to travel during the calendar year to visit family and friends.
Alternating Holidays
One of the most effective ways to save money when it comes to holiday travel is alternating hosting holidays. If you come from a large family you more than likely know what this entails. Growing up you probably spent one Christmas at your dad’s parents’ house and the next Christmas at your mom’s parents’ house. Now that you are trying to save money as an adult you can do the same thing.
Maybe your family can host everyone for a major holiday one year and then you can travel to someone else’s house the next year. This undoubtedly will help you save money on travel costs from year to year. In fact, you might be able to travel further for the holidays should you stay home every other year.
Celebrate Holidays Before or After Actual Date
Another money saving option is to celebrate the holidays, whichever ones they might be, either before or after the date they fall on the calendar. This option, should you need to book a flight, will save you money on flight tickets. Why? The answer is quite simple: you are flying outside of peak travel times. Peak travel times for Thanksgiving include the Wednesday before and the Friday after the holiday for people to get to and come home from their destination.
So, If you are looking to save some money on holiday travel, change the dates for the celebration. Suggest this method to your family, tell them how much money could be saved, and they might just go for it. For instance, if your family is not overly religious, suggest celebrating Christmas either a week before or a week after the actual date.
Airlines will have reduced ticket prices before or after peak holiday travel dates, making it even more enticing to celebrate on a different date.
Skip Holidays
The third, and least popular option of the bunch, is to skip certain holidays. Should your family not care about which holidays they celebrate, you should consider skipping the celebration of some holidays. This can include any of the following holidays:
Father’s Day
Mother’s Day
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Day
Easter
Hanukah
Kwanza
Just because you might not travel to see your family on one or more of these holidays does not mean you do not have to celebrate them completely. Have a holiday celebration with your immediate family that lives with you or lives in the same state as you instead of flying across the country to meet up with extended family. And if you are not able to adopt any of the above methods to save money, you can always look for hotel coupons online, which can help you save money, no matter which time of the year you plan your holiday.
