Pregnant and Frugal – Saving Money on Maternity – Part 2
Two weeks ago, I shared a few ways to save money on prenatal care. Read Pregnant and Frugal – Saving Money on Maternity – Part 1 here if you missed it. While pregnancy may not seem like an expensive stage of life, it can quickly add up from maternity clothes, vitamins, and doctor’s visits. It is best to save on the controllable expenses now to afford the essential expenses of test fees, ultrasound fees, and the hospital fees your insurance does not fully cover.
Save on Morning Sickness: The dreaded morning sickness is a good sign that the baby is healthy. However, it is still a miserable experience, especially if you have to work. Don’t lose money or sick hours over morning sickness by following these few simple tips. Have a little bit of protein before you go to bed. This can be a hard boiled egg or some turkey slices. Wake up slowly and enjoy hot tea and saltine crackers first thing in the morning. A great tea is the Yogi Woman’s Mother to Be tea on Amazon.
While many women do not wish to tell their workplace they are pregnant until they are in the safe second trimester, a little talk with the boss may make him more understanding.
Eat Healthy, Stay Wealthy: Don’t ever get in the way of a pregnant woman and her food cravings! Food cravings and unhealthy eating during pregnancy can add up, though. Not only are you spending more on junk food/fast food, but you are also not properly feeding yourself or the baby. This can lead in extreme weight gain (which may lead you to paying for a fad diet postpartum), and it could possibly lead to a harder delivery.
Indulge in your strong food cravings occasionally, but for every day eating, stick with healthy and affordable food, such as sweet potatoes, steamed vegetables, whole grains, and chicken.
Resist the Urge to Splurge: Pregnancy is an exciting time, especially right after you find out the sex of the baby. However, resist spending money on the baby until the last few weeks of your pregnancy. Waiting to spend is financially wise because you may be able to get everything you need through baby showers and gifts. You may also find that you can return many repeat gifts or unneeded gifts for credit towards items your really need.
When it comes to welcoming home the new baby, there is not a whole lot you need. Ask any seasoned mother what the essentials are and what they never used, such as a baby bath tub. This will help you avoid having all this extra stuff hanging around once your little one is too big to use them.
Insurance Assurance: Do you know what your health insurance covers? If your health insurance company does not cover maternity, now is the time to change companies. According to the law, health insurance companies cannot say that pregnancy is a pre-existing condition, however, they may try to. Speak with several insurance companies to make sure you get the best rate and coverage for your maternity.
If you plan on having a home birth or water birth, many insurance companies will not cover it. However, many midwives and specialists charge $5000-$6000 for the whole package of prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care. Use your insurance to cover ultrasounds and tests, while saving up for a home birth or birth center.
Pregnant ladies and those who wish to be pregnant in the future, enjoy your pregnancy. Being financially wise now will only put you and your new family on a firm foundation once he or she arrives.

Great tips. I am not pregnant yet but it is in the plans for the future. This will be a great reference. Thanks.
"enjoy hot tea" - Decaf, right? Haha - I've heard that the amount of caffeine in a single cup of coffee probably is okay, but my wife said when she's pregnant she's going to eliminate caffeine completely, just in case.
Actually, I'm interested in what other people have done - I've got a Y chromosome, so everything I've heard is second and third hand.

Hey PKamp3 - your wife and any pregnant lady can enjoy caffeine in small amounts, as in one cup of coffee a day. The major concern is that too much caffeine in the first trimester is shown to cause birth defects. Later in pregnancy, caffeine will keep the mom up all night with a bouncy baby inside.
I am staying away from caffeine in my pregnancy because it gives me heartburn, but a good cup of mint tea or ginger tea would be great. :)
