Thanksgiving Shopping: More Sales, More Spending, More Cash
A National Retail Federation survey reported this weekend that shoppers spent 9.1 percent more cash over Thanksgiving weekend. This number includes in-stores and on-line shopping. If you are wondering how many people visited stores and online retailers over “Black Friday” weekend, it is 226 million. Last year? It was 212 million. The weekend is defined as Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Sales and spending for Sunday are projected.
Reuters reports that the average spending for the weekend rose this year to $398.62 per person. Last year’s the average spending was $365.34. Total spending this year was about $52.4 billion. Last year it was $44.5 billion.
Where have been the majority of shoppers actually shopping? According to the trade group’s survey, the main shopping destination was department stores. Half of this weekend shoppers visited at least one department store. The rest of the shoppers went to the discount retailers and had fun visiting electronics stores.
On Sunday, a day before Cyber Monday, online retailers already reported strong sales. Research firm comScore reported on Sunday that shoppers increased online sales by 26 percent this Black Friday. Some analysts were predicting that the early store opening on Black Friday might hurt online retailers. Those predictions seemed to be not quite right.

We popped into Macy's over Black Friday because my husband wanted to see if their Frango Mints were on sale, and it was PACKED. So, I can believe that about the department stores!
