Ways to save money when having a baby
Babies cost an awful lot of money, everyone knows that. If you are expecting a baby, expect to spend thousands of dollars. Or not, perhaps? What can those of us who are on a budget or simply want to avoid spending lots of money on items that will not be used for very long do? What are some ways to save money, while still having everything you need for your baby?
Here is my top list of money-saving tips for the first year of your child’s life. They are all things that I have done myself, and I have never felt like I missed anything – my babies had everything they needed
1) Breastfeed. Almost every woman has the ability to breastfeed her babies. Breastfeeding is not only the only natural food for newborns, it is also an easy and simple way to feed a baby and more to the point of this topic, breastfeeding is totally free.
2) Have a baby shower. People love buying gifts for new babies, and if you have a baby registry that lists items you actually want and need, the gifts you receive at your shower could cover almost everything you need for your baby.
3) Let friends and family know that you would be happy to receive second hand items – if you are, of course. I know that I would love to give the crib I no longer need to a friend. It is still beautiful, but just taking up space in my home now that my babies don’t need it any more.
4) Shop around and compare prices before you buy. This might seem like an obvious tip, but it could save you an awful lot of money. Your stroller of choice could cost several hundreds of dollars more in one store compared to the next. Some stores also have coupons, so be on the look-out for them too.
5) Don’t buy things you do not need. I’m back to stating the obvious again, but if you see what some parents-to-be buy for their little ones, it is worth mentioning. If you have a crib, a pack ‘n play, a vibrating swing, a car seat and a stroller, that might just possibly be too much. If you are wondering whether your baby likes vibrating swings, seeing if you can borrow the item from a friend to test it out could save you from spending large amount on something your baby hates.
6) Consider cloth diapers. I used cloth diapers for my last baby, and they have worked great. They cost me a few hundred dollars to buy, and I have been using them for two years now. They work great, look wonderful, and save a ton of money.
