What Expenses to Expect for a Child

Published on Jul 05 2010 // Written By // Personal Finance

The most wonderful day of your life was the day you first held your bundle of joy in your arms. It almost seemed that time had stopped the moment the little baby looked deep into your eyes and cooed for attention. It was also a moment of reality check for you. A moment where you have to take stock of the expenses of bringing up a child. As parents, you would like to give the very best possible to your offspring. This meant considering the financial implications that one would have to bear to see that little baby grow up into a mature and responsible human being.

Before childbirth: Right from the word ‘go’ or as soon as one is pregnant one needs to check on the insurance coverage provided by the employer covering the pregnancy. Your regular visits to your OB-GYN, series of ultrasounds which could go as high as one every other week, or simply the hospitalization charges. One needs to make a budget of the co-pays and the deductibles one has to bear, given the majority would be taken care of by the insurance company.

Childbirth to teens: Next, are to take into consideration as soon as the baby says ‘Wah’. This includes child care expenses for infants, not to mention a chunk of the expenses on diapers, unless you are the super mom who gets her baby potty-trained by a year or two. The other and important expenses that can’t be ignored are that of a day care, if you are working parents. How can one avoid the incidentals that add to a child’s growing up years and demands that come out of peer pressure, like toys, summer camps and other needs.

Teens to college: Last, but not the least is the considerables for a sound education. One needs to decide on the saving up for his or her child’s college funds. Amount of college expenses would depend on the college and a curriculum a child selects. Some out-of-state colleges can be expensive. It is advisable to start a monthly fund saving up for the child’s college education right from after your child’s birth. It would be wise to save $500-$1000 a month to make sure you have a good amount of savings stashed up to deal with their college needs.

It is best to be conscious of the expenses once you have that most welcomed addition to your family. It definitely is good to be spending wisely and save wisely to provide a good and well protected future for your child.
