Whether we like it or not, there comes a time where we are in the market for new furniture. I don’t like it any more than the next person, but sometimes the couch has seen its last leg and the furniture shopping must ensue. But when that time comes, it doesn’t have to destroy your budget. There are some really great tricks to finding some fantastic furniture deals that will leave both you and your wallet happy.
This is one of my favorite places to look for furniture that most people don’t even think of. Since a lot of the consignment sales are geared towards children, the idea that they also consign furniture seems far fetched. But, in fact, it is not.
I have found that most children’s consignment sales began to incorporate all types of furniture a few years ago. And I don’t just mean kids furniture.
You may have a more difficult time finding an entire dining or living room set with this option, but if you are looking for smaller pieces, this may be just the ticket. Furniture, such as:
- Desk Chairs
- Dining Room Chairs
- Living Room Chairs
- Twin or Double Bed Frames
- Shelving Units
- Side Tables
So if any of these items are on your shopping list, then you should definitely scour the closest consignment sale and see what gems you can dig up.
The largest furniture market in the world is called High Point Furniture Market and it takes place every April and October in High Point, NC. This market is the furniture version of fashion week in Paris, where all of the new styles and colors for the season are premiered.
But, you can’t purchase anything at Market unless you are a designer or retailer. Which doesn’t help the general populace? However, once Market is over, almost all of the floor samples are sent to different furniture stores for sale at a deep discount. One such store that we have here locally is Heavner Furniture Market. They purchase the aforementioned floor samples, along with factory closeouts and special purchases directly from the manufacturer.
What this means for us is that their furniture is some of the best, and lowest, pricing around for brand new, in style, pieces. So if this is what you are looking for, then do some digging in your area to see if any of the stores follow this type of model.
The other option is to find one of the factory clearance stores for a specific store, such as Rooms to Go Outlet, and shop there instead of the main showroom. These pieces will usually have some slight blemishes or be older models. But if either of those aren’t that important to you, then this may be a great option!
Thrift store shopping can be a lot of fun! But you have to have the patience to sift through all sorts of items that may not be anything close to what you are looking for, in order to find the diamond in the rough. You know what they say, “One man’s junk, is another man’s treasure!”One man's junk, is another man's treasure! Click To Tweet
I know that I, personally, have donated a lot of furniture items to thrift stores to save money on taxes. Some of the things I donated were in perfectly fine shape. They just didn’t serve a purpose for me anymore, or I was moving and downsizing my stuff.
Some of my favorite places to either donate, or scour for deals, are:
I love all of these places, and some have better stuff donated to them than others. I have found that shopping at the thrift stores in the more affluent parts of town has a tendency to reap better rewards than shopping at the other locations. So location is something to keep in mind when you begin your search.
A lot of times I will begin my search for new items online before I ever go to a store. I do this to not only get an idea of what style I might be looking for but also to get some price ranges so that I have more realistic expectations set for myself. Every now and then, I get lucky and find what I am looking for online before I ever have to set foot in a store. When that is the case, it is usually through one of these websites:
- Facebook Marketplace
- Amazon (if you have Prime, then you get FREE shipping!)
Of course, some of these sites will be more expensive than others, so that is something to keep in mind. While on other sites, like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. Meaning your choices are more limited to whatever people happen to be trying to get rid of at the time, as opposed to new items that may have a lot in stock.
This is one of my absolute favorite options! Throughout the years, either my parents or friends, have decided to upgrade or change some of their furniture. Whenever they have done this, I usually get a call to see if I want any of their “old” furniture. There have been quite a few times that I have taken them up on their offers.
Some of the items I have received from friends and family, for FREE, are:
- Couches (x 3)
- Side Table
- Coffee Table
- Dining Table
- Bunk Beds
- Full Bed
- Patio Furniture Sets
- Charcoal Grills (may not be furniture, but I will take these all day long!)
If you know that somebody you are close to is in the market for upgrading or changing some of their furniture out, then ask them if they would be willing to give you their old stuff. This way the furniture is being loved on longer and you don’t have to pay anything for it, in most cases. I call that a win-win!
Best Furniture Deals
Overall, there are a lot of different ways and places you can go to find the best furniture deals. But my favorite is always to start with the FREE options, whenever possible, and then go from there. This will all depend on your needs, style and desires though, so those options may not fit everybody. Even if it doesn’t, you can still get some great furniture, for next to nothing, by shopping outside the box.
