How to Frugally Travel with Your Pet

Let’s face it, traveling can just get down right expensive! But, if you are considering traveling with your pet, it can be even more expensive. Most pet owners who want to travel, don’t want to leave their furry friends behind, though. So we looked into some of the most frugal ways to travel with your pet that won’t kill your travel budget.

Trusted Housesitters

As a loyal Trusted Housesitters pet sitter, I love this option. Trusted Housesitters pairs people needing a pet sitter while they are away with others who want to watch their pets, and their homes, in exchange for free lodging. I don’t know about you, but I happen to be a HUGE fan of free lodging!

While we don’t have any pets to bring with us when we travel, that option is available. Therefore, if you want to travel and bring your pet with you, this may be a great option.

If you know the dates you want to travel, then you can search anywhere around the world for options. The same applies if you know where you would like to go, or even just the region, but not the dates. Their platform is very easy to use and enter different combinations of data to pull the best sits for you. We go in every few weeks and look for certain places that are on our bucket list or certain date ranges that we know we have available to travel, just to see what comes up. When the perfect sit appears, then we apply and cross our fingers that we get chosen.

Since you have to apply for a sit, you will need to give the host the following information:

  • how many people will be joining you
  • any pets you plan to bring if any
  • what makes you qualified to sit for their pet/house
  • why you want to sit for them

The person needing the pet sitter will then go through the applications and decide which pet sitter they want to offer the gig to.

If it happens to be you, then you have just scored yourself, and your pet, free lodging for your trip! But, if you didn’t get chosen, then keep looking, because the right trip for you will come up.

Airbnb is another great option when you want to travel with your pet. Since Airbnb is offered in nearly every country now, the possibilities are almost limitless.

You have so many choices between types of lodging and parts of town you want to stay in. With Airbnb, the host will note if pets are allowed and which type. You can even filter your possible options by going to the Airbnb Pet-Friendly link directly.

If you aren’t sure where you want to go yet, all you have to do is enter the following information to pull up a plethora of choices:

  • Check-in date
  • Check-out date
  • How many adults
  • How many children

Of course, you can narrow down the place from “Anywhere” to a more specific region, if you prefer to be inundated with less choices to begin with. No matter how you choose to search, the most difficult part will be choosing from all of the great options for you and your pet.

One of the cheapest options when traveling is always going to be driving vs. flying. Of course, that might not always be an option, depending upon where you live and where you are going. But if driving is an option, this is always the one I choose. Not only can it save you a ton of money to drive, but you get the experience of seeing things on the road that you would otherwise miss.

I know that we have really enjoyed our summer road trips because we run across so many things we didn’t even know existed. And if you are traveling with a pet, this can bring another aspect to the excitement of finding new things on the road. Especially since you will probably need to stop more often for potty breaks. This gives you a chance to stretch your legs and check out your surroundings.

No Cost Hotels

Most hotels charge an additional pet fee to have your pet stay with you. Usually, this is due to having to clean up after the pet if it has an accident in the room. Sometimes pets will chew things up or scratch the furniture also. And for some reason, hotels don’t really like this.

But, there are a few hotels that specialize in traveling with pets. So these 5 are probably going to be the best bet for you.

Aloft Hotels

Aloft hotels will let your pet stay for free, as long as it is under 40 pounds. They also offer complimentary bowls, blankets and toys upon request.

Graduate Hotels

Not only are all pet fees are waived at Graduate hotels, but your pet gets a BarkBox upon arrival. How cool is that?

Kimpton Hotels

The Kimpton hotel chain don’t have pet fees for just your cats and dogs, but other pets as well. The hotels usually offer beds, bowls, blankets and treats. But some of them are even fancier and offer more pet amenities, including pet massages!

Motel 6

Motel 6 will let up to two service dogs or well behave pets stay for free. They will even let your children stay for free too, as long as they are well behaved!

Red Roof Inn

Red Roof Inn will let up to one pet per guest room stay for free, as long as they are below 80 pounds.
