Our 2 Favorite Apps to Save Money on Gas

For those of us who have to drive on a regular basis, gas can get pretty darn expensive. So here are 2 of our favorite apps to save money on gas. There are a lot of us who live in an area where driving a car is a must. Sometimes the public transportation is either non-existent or sub-par, so driving is the only option you have. The problem is gassing up our vehicles can really cost some serious money sometimes. This is especially true if you have a long regular commute or are shuttling around children. Since we fall into the latter category, I have found 2 awesome apps to help save money on gas. I have been using both of them for a couple of years now and love them!

Get Upside App

The Get Upside app is one of the regular apps I use for gas. It is still fairly new and hasn’t hit every area nationwide yet. Their main premise is to give rebates on gas, groceries and some restaurants. So far, my particular area is still only getting rebates for the gas category. But, I am crossing my fingers that the groceries and restaurants aren’t far off.

This app is very easy to use, which I, personally, appreciate. As soon as I open the app, a map of my location and participating gas stations appear. The app shows me the price of gas at each station after the rebate, not before. It also let’s me know how many cents off I will be getting as my rebate.

So when I am making a decision, I look at the final cost and how much I’ll be saving. Because, sometimes, it makes more sense for me to pay 1-2 cents more and get a bigger rebate. This is because I will be getting more money put into my Get Upside bank to spend.

Once you choose the gas stations you plan to hit up, you have to click “Claim” in order to activate it. You must click this before you start pumping gas. If you don’t, you won’t be able to claim the rewards. So keep this in mind!

Once you pump gas, and get your receipt, then click on “Upload Receipt.” If you do not get a receipt, you can’t claim the reward, so this is another important tip. In fact, I have had to go into a few gas stations to get my receipt before because the machine wasn’t working. Which I really dislike! But, the reward was worth it.

Once the receipt uploads, click “Confirm” and then you are done. The money will then show up in your Get Upside account to cash out in about 24 hours.

You can cash out via PayPal to get cash, or you can use the cash for a digital gift card from places such as:

  • Clothes – Adidas, Gap Options, Kohl’s, Nike, Target
  • Entertainment – AMC Theaters, Google Play, iTunes & App Store, Uber
  • Home Improvement – Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Lowe’s
  • Restaurants – Applebee’s, Chili’s, Domino’s, Dunkin Donuts, Maggiano’s, On the Border Mexican Grill, Panera Bread, Starbucks
  • Shopping – Amazon, CVS Pharmacy
  • Sports – Cabela’s

We usually cash the money out for an Amazon gift card since we shop for a lot of things there. But, they seem to be constantly adding new gift card options all the time. Which makes it even easier to use all those savings on something you really want. I love this app because it is very easy to use and quickly gives me money back.

Receipt Hog

I have been using this app for a few years now and love it! I not only use it for gas, but for pretty much anywhere I shop.

The major perk with Receipt Hog is that where you shop is fairly irrelevant. There are a few places that the app won’t register as a valid shopping trip. But you really won’t know which ones those are until you upload your receipt. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose!

The app is pretty simple in that you just need to take a picture of your receipts and rate your visit. There are different rewards for different types of stores, such as:

  • Big Box Stores
  • Gas Stations
  • Grocery Stores
  • Specialty Stores

As long as you take a picture of your receipt within a 2 week period of time, it will be credited to your account. Once you hit 1000 coins, they can be redeemed for a $5 Amazon gift card. Or you can choose to have it deposited into your PayPal account instead. After the $5 reward, the next reward levels are:

  • 2900 coins, the reward turns into $15
  • 4300 coins turns into $25
  • 6500 coins turns into $40

I have cashed my coins in a few times now. Only once have I cashed them in for the $40 level. The other 2 times I cashed in at the 4300 coin level . All 3 times we cashed in for Amazon gift cards so that we could purchase household things we needed. It was awesome and totally free!

Using these 2 apps in conjunction with each other can really help you wrack up the gas savings! Share on X

Save Money on Gas

Overall, I love using apps to help me save money on gas, and anything else I can possibly save money on. Nobody wants to have to spend their hard earned money filling up their gas tank. But using apps such as Get Upside and Receipt Hog help take a little bit of the pain away. And, I get to use the money I save for other cool things that we want or need. So for us, this is a huge win!

Have you tried either of these apps before to help you save money on gas? Or have you found some other apps that help you save money also?
