When it comes to meal delivery services, there are just so many to choose from these days. And, luckily for us, there seems to always be at least one that will fit each person’s individual wants and needs. This is where Purple Carrot fits in with us. We are always on the hunt for more creative ways to do things financially, and they fit in with that budget-friendly mindset for us. But, we also have kids who can be picky eaters and have a few dietary restrictions in our house. So, we needed to find a meal delivery service that would not only be budget-friendly, but dietary inclusive and have enough diversity to keep us excited. Enter Purple Carrot meal delivery service!

How Budget-Friendly is Purple Carrot?

Purple Carrot has a few different options for their meal delivery service to choose from. Plus they offer some extras you can add on if you happen to have a little extra dough in your grocery budget that week.

The base plan offerings and potential add on extras are as follows:

  • 2 servings 3 dinners per week – $71.94 per week (1st week is $51.94)
  • 2 servings 4 dinners per week – $95.92 per week (1st week is $75.92)
  • 4 servings 2 dinners per week – $79.92 per week (1st week is $59.92)
  • 4 servings 3 dinners per week – $119.88 per week (1st week is $99.88)
  • Breakfast extras 4 servings only per breakfast – $4.49 per serving or $17.96 for 4
  • Lunch extras 2 serving minimum – $8.99 per serving or $17.98 per lunch for 2

Each of these options also has free shipping, which is not the standard norm across the board with meal delivery services. So I like that there aren’t those hidden shipping charges added in to the weekly cost. While their meals may seem a bit higher cost per serving, they are completely plant based. And they source everything organic and locally when possible, which can drive the price tag up a bit. But, all of those things are very important to us, so we are willing to pay a bit more for these types of ingredients. After all, you are what you eat! And eating well now can help prevent future medical issues. So I am all for that.

Stretching it Further

Luckily for us, we are pretty darn good at getting creative with our cooking and stretching things further than they normally go. So, for a family like us, we would go with the 4 servings of 2 dinners a week, just to add in a little something extra to what we already have. This means that we would need to account for that extra $80 per week to use this service. But, the upside is that we can easily stretch their 4 serving meal to the 7 servings we need since their portions are so darn large. However, we can get it for even cheaper by using the Rakuten app since they offer rebates with Purple Carrot right now too.

And since they offer something a bit out of the ordinary for us, this is akin to us going out to eat two nights a week with the family. I don’t know about you, but I have not found a place yet where we can get an entire healthy meal for all 7 of us for only $40. Plus, there is an opportunity for leftovers from each dinner option, so we can creatively turn those leftovers into yet another meal.

So, I’m really liking the idea of incorporating Purple Carrot maybe once a month as a culinary treat. This is easy to do because they let you change your subscription weekly. We can either change how many servings or meals we get or pause the service for any time up to a month, or cancel completely. So, this is a huge bonus in my mind because of the added flexibility.

Purple Carrot has 4 different dietary plans you can choose between also, for a bit of added customization. They are:

  • High Protein
  • Gluten Free
  • Quick & Easy
  • Chef’s Choice

Each plan will lend itself to those with different lifestyles. For those who need a bit more protein in their diet, but are looking for it in the plant-based form, then the High Protein option is the best choice for them. For those, like us, who have people with Celiac and gluten sensitivities in the house, then they would go the Gluten-Free route. The Quick & Easy option is best for those who simply don’t have the time to spend in the kitchen or lack advanced culinary skills. Everybody has to start somewhere! And Chef’s Choice is for those who like even more diversity and potentially a challenge in the kitchen. If we knew for sure that we could always get Gluten-Free options, we would go the Chef’s Choice route just for the surprise factor alone.

If you go with any of the plans other than the Chef’s Choice, you get the option to choose your dinner choices from the 8 weekly options you are given. So, you can potentially create some of your own diversity this way also.

I love that everything they send is not only vegetarian but also vegan. So you won’t have any dishes that require cheese or eggs. Of course, you can doctor your dishes up with some of that or your own added spices too, if you prefer. This is probably what we would choose to do since we love spices so much. And, that would continue the theme of stretching the meals out even further also. Bonus!

While the initial price tag may seem a bit higher than some other services, their portion sizes are huge. Plus, you can easily add some of your own ingredients in to change the leftovers a bit and create a completely new dish for your family. And, if you need to create a bit more customization based on dietary restrictions, that can be done also.
