Plan out your meals before you go shopping. Make a list of all the food you will be needing in the week. This will help you not get sidetracked and end up spending money on food that may not even be eaten. Also, check your cupboards before you leave. Chances are you already have some of the items you will need for the coming week.
Limit your amount of trips to the store
If it is possible to only go to the supermarket once or twice a week, do so. Spending money on transport builds up over time. Also spending time inside the store will probably lead to more unnecessary spending. The less you are around the supermarket, the less compelled you will feel to spend.
Buy store brands
Generic home-brands are almost always cheaper than their rival name-brands. While in some cases you may wish to go for the more expensive option, there is generally little difference in quality between the two. When buying generic items such as power adapters, there is no reason not to go for the cheaper option.
Foods like rice, pasta and potatoes make up a large portion of most people’s diets. Buy these items in bulk. This saves a huge amount of money and means that you will almost always have some supplies at home.
Buy in season food
Things like fruits can be incredibly expensive when not in season. Buy fruit when it is in season and save a lot of money.
Make sure the food you are buying is not close to its expiration date. Supermarkets will often put the oldest food in the front rows of the shelves. For example, if you do not plan on consuming a carton of milk within a day or two, go for one with an expiration date that suits you.
Coupons and specials
If you find a coupon for something you wouldn’t normally buy, don’t feel compelled to buy it. Only use coupons on items that you actually need and will use. The same goes for in store specials, if something you don’t need is 30% off, you still don’t need it.
If you have the option not to spend money on food and to eat leftovers, do it. There is no point in buying food and then throwing part of it away. Make sure all past meals in your fridge are gone before you consider buying the day’s lunch at a takeaway outlet.
